Did you know that Google now lets you access Gmail without an @gmail email address? Well, now you do. However, and, for the moment, you will need to have a Yahoo or Hotmail email address account in order for this to work. Google said that it currently only supports Yahoo and Hotmail/Outlook email accounts, so if you’re using something else like an AOL or iCloud email address it won’t work. But don’t worry or get discouraged if you don’t own one of the supported email addresses, because the company also said that it would be adding more email providers very soon, in the near future.
Signing in to Gmail this way allows you to do something called “Gmailify”. Gmailifying your emails allows you to take advantage of Gmail’s most popular and powerful features like inbox filtering and organization (includes automatic email sorting), advanced spam protection, faster search and Google Now cards. Gmailify is an option that you’ll only see and be able to use when you login using a different email provider.
If you want to use Gmail to check your Yahoo or Hotmail/Outlook.com messages only, in other words as an email client, you can easily turn Gmailify off whenever you want. To turn it off, simply unlink your other accounts on your Android phone or tablet.
How to log into Gmail without a Google Account or @gmail Address
- Download, install, and then open the Gmail app.
- Sign in to your Yahoo or Hotmail/Outlook email account with the same username and password that you’ve always used to access your non-Gmail accounts.
- Now you will have to enable Gmailify. To do so, first tap the three bar menu icon in the top left.
- Then tap “Settings”.
- Select the email account that you would like to link.
- And then tap “Link Account”
Gmail is perhaps the most robust, complete, and powerful free email solution on the planet, maybe even the universe, so if you want to give it a try without having to create an account, this is probably the best and only way to do it.
